I have always loved Corn mazes. In my opinion they’re one of the best things about October, and some of the most fun you can have with the family on a crisp October day. Grab the kids, get dressed up, throw on a warm sweater, and head off for a few hours of family friendly fun. Well if you get lost in the maze, I guess it could take you a few hours more… 🙂

Now one thing I love about corn mazes, is that you’re never truly lost…

Back when we lived in Saskatchewan, many years ago there were always corn mazes around, even as an adult, I had a few Corn Maze farms as clients – helping them attract new visitors.

But when we moved to the Okanagan, I wasn’t sure we were going to find many corn mazes as we were no longer in the wide open farms of Saskatchewan, but to my surprise…

2. Family Daze In The Corn – Historic O’Keefe Ranch

Join us for our regular fall season Family Daze in the Corn Maze. Get lost in the family-friendly corn maze, enjoy a meet and greet with our friendly goats, take pictures with FlapJack our donkey, load up on your favourite candies in the general store, enjoy the model railway exhibit, take a tour by wagon rides provided by the Pioneer Power Club and stay warm at the bonfires… maybe even have a s’more or two.

Visit during the day to enjoy our beautiful corn maze with wide, pathways. After the sun goes down we open up displays for spooky entertainment! Be prepared to turn a corner and see three witches mixing a magic broth or a mad scientist conducting freakish experiments. Don’t worry, they are all animatronics, there to entertain.

4. McMillan Farm Corn Maze & Activities

If you’re looking for family fun, McMillan Farms has a large list of activities for all ages to enjoy! You can do everything from checking out the Corn Maze, going on a Hayride, walking through the Hay Maze, checking out the Sling Shott, visit the Petting Farm, Concession Stand, and Cutouts for pictures!

For the 2021 season, we will continue with some changes made in 2020 including:

  • An online ticketing system will be launched to allow us to follow Provincial Health capacity rules.
  • Walk-ins will only be available if we have not reached capacity.
  • Masks are optional while visiting the farm, but are mandatory for the hayride.
  • Signage reminding guests to regularly sanitize will be posted.
  • Signage reminding guests to maintain a distance of 2m between family units will also be posted.
  • We reserve the right to cancel times due to changes with Provincial Health rules or weather-related events.

Walk Of Terror – System Failure

If you’re looking for something spooky and downright awesome to light you up this October, heading into Halloween… This looks like one of the most awesome, and possibly terrifying haunted house experiences things you’ll find in the Okanagan this fall.

Check out this crazy fun trailer Caravan Farm Theatre has put together for their new immersive experience called Walk Of Terror System Failure.

Audiences will make a nighttime journey that unfolds over a 40-minute walk through the fields and forests for a potent encounter with sound, image, and narrative. Sanitized MP3 players and headphones will be provided.

The audio is rated PG as there are mature themes. Children are welcome to attend at the parent’s discretion.

The walk is rate as moderate difficulty. This is an outdoor event, taking place on an uneven dirt and forested pathways, with limited lighting. If you have limited mobility or vision, please contact the box office.

Each guest will receive a sanitized MP3 player, headphones, and instructions.

Patrons must be onsite and ready to go ten minutes before showtime. Late arrivals will be bumped to the next showing, pending availability. Warm clothing and closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. Dogs are not permitted.

BeaverTails will be on site serving up poutine, sweets, and beverages for you to enjoy before or after the show!

The walk will go on rain, shine, or snow.

What I love about the Okanagan, is that we have beverages of all kinds, a thriving wine industry, and up and coming beer industry, new distilleries are popping up, and I mean how can we not talk about Cider, when we’re surrounded by the tastiest fruit in Canada.

We met up with our friends at The Firehall Brewery in Oliver BC, (a little tucked away brewery, downstairs from Papa’s Firehall Bistro ) where we get chatting about how they make their delicious beer, as well as how they’re working hard to bring live entertainment back during this pandemic.

Let’s talk about Facebook & Instagram.

Facebook is for getting in front of your customers and starting a conversation. It’s a platform that thrives on engagement. The more you can get your customers to interact and engage the greater your reach will be and the more impact you’ll have. When throwing advertising dollars behind a campaign you want to focus on ads that are exciting for your customer, ads that build awareness of who you are, and and ads that re-target your customer leading to some kind of special offer that is going to make your customer smile.

On Facebook you may be talking to an audience who doesn’t know who you are. Maybe they’re not even looking for a new stylist at the moment. That’s okay. It’s a great way to get a jump on your competition and catch the attention of a possible new customer, BEFORE they’re fed up with where they currently buy, and out looking for you!

Instagram is similar to Facebook, but while Facebook is more video and text, Instagram is 100% more visual. Pictures thrive on Instagram.

Insta Stories are a great way to let your personality shine through, show your space and allow your followers to experience your brand (who you are) through short engaging video and posts!

There is now another option that Instagram has just rolled out called IGTV!

This is where you can create higher quality video up to 10 minutes and really educate your market on what makes you the best in town when it comes to the services that you offer.

We recommend creating great “how to” videos on this platform. Show your audience how to style hair. Record yourself cutting hair, mixing colour, or walk them through your consultation process- the sky’s the limit!

What’s the Deal With Google?

Google is for jumping out in front of customers who know they have a problem. These clients are looking for a solution right now. They are on the hunt for the right business to solve their problems.

Once your customer get’s to this point, you better be ready to snap them up. This is where what you say, and how you say it is key. How To Get Customers Using The Internet – Part I

Before we get too far into “How To Customers Using The Internet”, let’s talk about why you would want to, and why, if you’re not, you’re losing out on a huge opportunity. Probably thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars in missed income.

Years ago there was a great little restaurant down the street from our house. It was one of my favourite places. A little hideaway, a dive.. Yes, but it had the best and juiciest burgers you’ve ever seen. I’m not just talking about fast food burgers and fries. They had some really great, handmade, gourmet, mouth-watering, food. And the owners – They were some of the most outgoing and friendliest people you’d ever meet. You know, like the old Italian restaurant owner who loves to greet everyone, shake their hands, and really get to know his customers.

Except these guys didn’t have grey hair. They were maybe in their 40s. The kind of people you know would go out of their way to make sure your experience at their restaurant was as good, if not better than sitting down at a high-end restaurant. Great food, wonderful service, and at a price that didn’t leave you scared to go back.

A triple threat right?

Up on their wall, as you walked into the restaurant, you could see a small sign that said, “Regina’s best-kept secret!”

They did little advertising, or promotions as they relied on word of mouth and customer referrals to keep them going. It worked… for a while.

That is until the city was expanding, new shopping centers were opening up and moving in. Chain restaurants, fast food, box restaurants, who all knew the power of advertising.

So even though we all know chain restaurants have okay food, they have okay staff, they have okay service, their numbers tend to grow month over month. All because they know the power of attracting new customers by building awareness through advertising.

Slowly that great little restaurant got slower, with less customers coming in so much so it got to a point where they had to shut down the restaurant.

They had to shut down because businesses who knew how to advertise moved into their local market, and drowned them out. These competitors (even though there was more than enough business for everyone) seemingly took over the market.

Now this was before the domination of Facebook, Instagram and Google, and before you could reach new customers almost instantly online. But the principle is still the same. Businesses who advertise, get more customers. They retain those customers and their business can continue to grow month after month.

Even though we’re far past the dawn of the internet. Even though most of the world, including you and I, and almost every one of your customers are online. Businesses are not using the web to advertise the right way.

If you’re like most businesses, you’re probably posting a few selfies throughout the week, sharing something funny, and asking people to buy buy buy… or to book in.

This type of advertising isn’t advertising, and it doesn’t work for the long haul.

A big part of the problem is that for so long, the social platforms we use to advertise on, used to be free. There was a time you could reach all of your customers with doing very little work. If you put in the time. Facebook and Google were easy to use.

You could post a blog on your website, create a post on Facebook and you would see customers react. For awhile you could easily grow your social media presence with very little effort.

In the last couple of years, these platforms that were free to use, have become pay to play platforms if you’re a business. If you’re not paying, you’ve probably noticed how you show up less and less in your customers news feed.

It doesn’t mean that if you don’t pay you won’t see much value, it’s just that if you don’t pay you won’t get the reach and attention you deserve.
